A Life in Flow

Lately I’ve been pondering the concept of flow. It’s that beautiful, effortless synergy that you experience when you are aligned. You are fully engaged in each moment, quietly working away, without projecting into the future, nor dwelling on the past; you are free to express that which comes to you in an organic + unforced way. It’s a very productive + creative space to be in. A state of flow elevates us from the humdrum of everyday life + guides us to a more meaningful existence. Yup, it can be that lofty.

In my mind, moving well comes from a place of flow. If you observe ballet dancers + how they move - with lightness, ease + grace - there is an underlying element of flow. Indeed, Joseph Pilates originally designed his method so that one exercise moves effortlessly into the next.

In my approach to his work, I start with small, isolated movements + then build upon this - layer by layer - into full body integrative sequences, so that students may tap into the feeling of flow.

It’s not just about physical flow, either:

“The movement of the mind is reflected in the movement of the body + the movement of the body in the movement of the mind. To move is to develop the strength of this dynamic relationship between the mind, body + the living synergy of one’s environment.”
- Dawn Strom.

In Pilates we work to unite mind, body + spirit. It is a practice that doesn’t just start + end on the mat, either; it is something that you carry with you, flowing into other aspects of your life, helping you to find purpose + clarity in all that you do.
